Carrière Wellington , Mémorial de la Bataille d’Arras
9 Avril 1917.
24000 Soldats britanniques venus des confins du monde occupent Arras et attendent dans les tunnels et Carrieres souterraines sous le front.
Ils attendent ce 9 Avril.
Ils seront 600 à creuser durant les 6 mois precedents les 20km de tunnels partants du centre ville vers le front, ils raccorderont les carrieres de Craie creusées au 17ème siècle.
Les soldats sortiront de nul part pour tuer les Allemands, comme une nuée continue, la bataille sera terrible: 4000 morts par jours.
Les Anglais attendait les Français pour lesquels ils faisaient diversion; ils ne viendrons pas. c’était une trahison.
En déferlant sur la plaine gelée et enneigée à 5 heures du matin, ils s’étaient préparés: moustache, coupe de cheveux… ils avaient bu du rhum aussi… ils connaissaient la suite.
Un britannique meurt fier et loyal envers sa patrie.
Les Brit’s laissèrent tout dans l’obscurité, durant des décennies.
Leurs vies s’arrêtèrent pour la majorité d’entre eux en sortant après une semaine d’attente dans la pénombre humide.
Le mémorial est aujourd’hui accessible a tous, 13 mètres sous terre par le biais d’un ascenseur. c’est un véritable lieu de pèlerinage pour les Britanniques, même Peter Jackson le réalisateur australien s’y est rendu.
La visite avec des reproduction des casques d’époque fait son effet.
Dommage que la scénographie soit trop présente.
En ce lieu on prends vraiment conscience du mot Mondiale dans Guerre Mondiale.

April 9, 1917. Wellington Quarry, Memorial of the Battle of Arras 24,000 British soldiers from the far reaches of the world occupy Arras and wait in tunnels and Underground Carrieres under the front.
They are waiting for this 9th of April.
They will be 600 to dig during the 6 months preceding the 20km of tunnels leaving the city center towards the front, they will connect the quarries of Chalk dug in the 17th century.
They will come out of nowhere to kill the Germans, like a continuous cloud, the battle will be terrible: 4000 dead per day.
The English waited for the French for whom they were diversioning; they will not come. it was a traitor.
By breaking on the frozen and snowy plain at 5 o’clock, they had prepared: mustache, haircut … they had drunk rum too … they knew the rest.
They left everything in the dark for decades.
Their lives stopped for the majority of them leaving after a week of waiting in the damp twilight.
The memorial is now accessible to everyone, 13 meters underground through an elevator. it is a real place of pilgrimage for the British, even Peter Jackson went there.
The visit with reproduction of vintage helmets makes its effect.
Too bad the scenography is too present.
